Dogs and Inflatable Paddle Boards: A Match Made in Heaven?

When it comes to paddle boarding, we know that many love to venture out with their four legged companion, however we realise there are a few safety concerns when it comes to taking your dog out on the water. Safety is paramount whilst out paddling, and there are a few extra considerations to make when taking your pup with you. We’ve pulled together a few precautions and tips to help you enjoy some dog-friendly paddle boarding.

Invest in a good quality inflatable paddle board

A good quality inflatable paddle board will provide stability and comfort for both you and your dog. When choosing a board, make sure you consider both your weight and the weight of your dog - the larger the dog in comparison to the board, the more unstable it will be. It’s also important to choose a paddle board that has good surface grip, this will ensure your pup doesn’t go sliding around when you hit a wave. There is also a misconception surrounding paddle boarding with dogs that they can damage and puncture an inflatable paddle board, however we can reassure you this isn’t true! As long as you have a good quality and robust paddle board, your dogs should be able to climb aboard without causing any damage. 

Take it slow

If your pup hasn’t been out on a paddle board before, they will most likely find the experience slightly uneasy and overwhelming. So it’s important that you’re confident and comfortable when out on the paddle board to help put them at ease. You also want to make sure to choose a calm body of water such as a lake and take it slow whilst your furry friend becomes accustomed to the new experience.

Use a life jacket

Just like humans, dogs need life jackets too. Although most dogs are good swimmers, it’s still extremely important to make sure they’re wearing one. A life jacket will help keep your dog afloat and make them feel more secure on the water if they do fall off. 

Train your dog

Before going stand up paddle boarding with your dog, make sure they are trained to sit and stay in one spot. It's also a good idea to tire out your energetic dog before bringing them out on the water. This will keep them from running around on the board and tipping it over, keeping both you and your pup secure and dry.

Use a non-slip surface

When paddle boarding with dogs it’s also wise to ensure your board has a non-slip surface to sit on, to avoid them slipping into the water. As an extra precaution you could take a towel or mat with you to place down for your dog to sit on.

Keep plenty of water

It’s important to stay hydrated whilst out exploring so make sure to bring plenty of water for both you and your dog, and some treats! 

Dry bags are a great way to take any essentials out with you on your paddle board, ensuring they stay safe and dry. Pack away your water bottle, phone, keys, and even a small first aid kit in case of any minor injuries. 

Be mindful of the weather

Last but not least, it's always a good idea to keep the weather in mind, particularly when taking your favourite four-legged friend. Avoid going out on your SUP in rough water or during high winds, as this is hazardous for both you and your pup. When bringing them out for the first time, try to pick a calm day with calm water to make the experience as stress-free as possible.
