The short answer
Your fin is designed to come off, so a broken one doesn't retire the board. On Wave 3.0 boards with the quick-release fin system, release the old fin, slide the replacement into the bracket, and push the fin clip into place until you hear it click. No tools needed. The only real job is getting the correct replacement fin for your model — more on that below.
First — what fin system does your board have?
Most current Wave 3.0 boards use a tool-less quick-release fin: the fin slides into a bracket on the underside of the board and is held by a small fin clip. Some models, like the Recon 3.0, run a triple-fin setup (a larger centre fin plus two side fins) for extra control in changeable conditions.
If you have an older Wave board, your fin fitting may differ slightly — check your board's manual on the How To Guides page to be sure. The steps below cover the current quick-release system.
Step 1 — Remove the broken fin
- Lay the board deck-side down on a soft, clean surface so you're not resting it on the fin area.
- Release the fin clip — the small plastic tab on a string that sits midway along the fin bracket — and slide the broken fin out of the bracket.
- Check the empty bracket and clear out any sand or grit while you've got easy access to it.
Step 2 — Get the right replacement fin
This is the part worth getting right. Fins aren't always interchangeable between models, so the safest route is a replacement made for your board.
- Browse replacement fins in our SUP accessories, or
- Contact the team via the chat bot with your board model and we'll point you to the correct fin.
If you're mid-trip and stuck, note that many inflatable boards share a common fin-box style, so a universal replacement may fit — but check compatibility with us first rather than assume, so you don't end up with a fin that won't seat properly.
Step 3 — Fit the new fin
- Slide the replacement fin into the bracket, following the same orientation as the one you removed (the swept edge trails behind, pointing towards the tail).
- Push it fully home until the fin clip slots into the space midway along the bracket. You'll hear a click once it's fully secured.
- Give it a gentle wiggle. A correctly fitted fin is firm and won't slide out.
Step 4 — Check it's secure
Before you paddle, confirm:
- the fin clip has clicked into place,
- the fin doesn't slide or rock in the bracket, and
- it's sitting straight, in line with the length of the board.
Troubleshooting
- The fin won't fit into the slot. Check the bracket is free of debris — sand is the usual culprit. If the slot looks distorted, it may have been bent during packing; gently reshape it and take extra care folding the board in future so the fin slot isn't crushed.
- The fin keeps sliding out. The fin clip isn't seated. Make sure that plastic clip drops into its space midway along the bracket and clicks — that's what locks the fin in.
Prevent the next broken fin
The fin is the most exposed part of your board, so a few habits save a lot of replacements:
- Always set the board down fin-up (deck-side down), never resting on the fin.
- Never put weight on the board while it's sitting on its fin — that's how most fins snap.
- Detach the fin before deflating and rolling the board. Wave's manual specifically recommends this to avoid both a bent fin slot and the fin puncturing the board as you roll it.
- Watch for shallows. Grounding the fin on rocks or a sandy bottom is a common way to crack one.
Is a broken fin covered by warranty?
A fin broken through impact, grounding, or general use is accidental damage or wear rather than a manufacturing fault, so it's a replacement-part purchase rather than a warranty claim. If, on the other hand, a fin or its clip failed without any knock — say the mechanism didn't hold from new — get in touch, as that's worth us taking a look at under your 2-year Wave warranty.
Quick reference
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Removing a broken fin | Release the fin clip, slide it out |
| Choosing a replacement | Match your board model — check accessories or ask us |
| Fitting the new fin | Slide in, push until the clip clicks |
| Fin won't fit | Clear debris from the bracket; reshape a bent slot |
| Fin slides out | Seat the fin clip until it clicks |
| Broken by impact/use | Replacement part, not a warranty claim |
